Sexually Transmitted Diseases
男性性感染症外来
What are sexually transmitted infections(STIs)?
Sexually transmitted infections, commonly known as STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), are infections.
These infections can come back even after successful treatment, and it's possible to have multiple STIs at the same time.
Without proper protection, anyone who is sexually active may be at risk of infection.
Main Routes of Infection
STIs spread through sexual contact with mucous membranes during sexual activities (including oral sex and anal sex).
Many people have no symptoms and unknowingly pass the infection to others.
How to Prevent STIs
Using condoms is a common way to prevent STIs, but infections can still occur through oral sex and other activities, so complete prevention is difficult.
However, you can greatly reduce your risk of infection by using preventive medications and vaccines together.
Why STI Treatment Is Important
In recent years, STIs including syphilis have been increasing among men and women of all ages.
There are many types of STIs, each with different routes of infection, symptoms, and treatments.
Early treatment often results in mild cases, but if left untreated, STIs can lead to serious complications, infertility risks, and can even be life-threatening.
If you notice any changes such as itching or discomfort in the genital area, bumps, or problems when urinating, please consult us before symptoms get worse. Revios Shinsaibashi is a men's specialty clinic.
You can visit us with confidence, even for sensitive symptoms.
*For STI consultations, a urine test is required at both initial and follow-up visits for diagnosis.
Who Should See a Doctor Right Away
STIs often progress without noticeable symptoms.
If left untreated, they can become serious and may spread to your partner, so early consultation is very important.
If you have any of the following symptoms or situations, please do not hesitate to contact us.
- Pain or discomfort when urinating
- Itching, redness, swelling, or bumps (lumps, warts) in the genital area
- Discomfort in the throat with symptoms different from a common cold
- Partner was diagnosed with an STI
- Had sex without using a condom
- Used sexual services or had sex with multiple partners
- Feel unwell or worried about your health after sexual activity
- Had an STI before
- No symptoms but want to check if you are infected
- Worried about passing an infection to your partner / Want peace of mind with someone important

Whether you have symptoms or not, it is important to get tested as soon as you feel concerned.
Common STIs and Treatments
Some STIs, if left untreated, can lead to serious risks such as infertility.
Many STIs also progress without noticeable symptoms and can appear in unexpected places like the throat.
If you have any concerning symptoms, or if you feel worried after reading about the characteristics of each disease thinking "this might be me," early testing is important.
If you think you may be at risk, please contact with us.

Syphilis
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Lumps or sores on genitals, lips, or anus (often painless)
<If Progressed>
- Rash (including palms and soles of feet)
- Fever, fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes, hair loss, and other symptoms throughout the body
Details
What is Syphilis?
Syphilis is an infection caused by bacteria called Treponema pallidum.
It spreads through mucous membranes in the genitals, anus, or mouth, and is characterized by periods without symptoms that make it hard to detect. Symptoms can spread throughout the body over several years after infection, and if left untreated, it can lead to serious complications.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Serious damage to brain, heart, blood vessels, eyes, bones, and other organs
- Cases of blindness, paralysis, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular disease, and death have been reported
- Treatment period becomes longer (several weeks to 1 month if early, 6 months to over 1 year if advanced)
Testing
- Doctor's examination + blood test
- Test results: Next day
Treatment
Syphilis is treated with oral or injectable antibiotics.
Chlamydia
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Pain or discomfort when urinating
- Clear discharge from the urethra
<If Progressed>
- Swelling or pain in the epididymis
- In some cases, inflammation spreads, causing fever and lower abdominal pain
Details
What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is an STI caused by bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis. It can infect not only the genitals but also the throat and anus. It spreads through sexual contact and often progresses without symptoms, creating a high risk of unknowingly infecting partners.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Can cause prostatitis and epididymitis
- Can lead to male infertility
- Inflammation may become chronic and treatment prolonged
Testing
- Urine test or urethral discharge collection
- Test results: Next day (same-day option available for self-pay)
Treatment
Chlamydia is treated with oral antibiotics.
Gonorrhea
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Severe pain when urinating
- Pus discharge from the urethra
- Itching, redness, swelling in the genital area
<If Throat is Infected>
- Sore throat, discomfort (often no symptoms)
Details
What is Gonorrhea?
Symptoms usually appear 2-10 days after infection, with severe pain during urination and pus discharge being typical symptoms. It can infect not only the genitals but also the throat through oral sex. It is highly contagious and can spread easily even with minimal contact. Drug-resistant strains are also increasing, making proper testing and treatment important.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Spread to prostatitis and epididymitis
- Can cause male infertility
- Reinfection to partner through throat (ping-pong infection)
Testing
- Urine test or urethral discharge collection
- Test results: Next day (same-day option available for self-pay)
Treatment
Gonorrhea is treated with oral antibiotics or intravenous administration.
Usually, results are expected from a single treatment.
Condyloma Acuminata (Genital Warts)
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Small white to pink warts on penis, scrotum, or around anus
- Usually no pain or itching (difficult to notice)
<If Progressed>
- Warts increase in number and size, becoming cockscomb-shaped or cauliflower-like
- May cause discomfort during urination or bowel movements, bleeding or pain from friction
Detail
What is Condyloma Acuminata?
Condyloma acuminata is a viral STI caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Several weeks to months after infection, warts appear on the skin or mucous membranes around the genitals and anus. Once developed, it tends to recur, making early treatment important.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Warts spread over a wide area and become visually prominent
- Physical discomfort and pain, inflammation and bleeding from rubbing against clothing
- Having warts in the genital area itself causes psychological stress and distress
- Certain HPV types carry risk of cancer development
Testing
- Visual examination by doctor is the primary method
- Viral identification test by swabbing
- Test results: 2 weeks
Treatment
Condyloma acuminata warts are treated with specialized topical medications or surgical removal depending on the extent and size of symptoms. Because recurrence is common, regular follow-up may be necessary.
Genital Herpes
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Blisters or sores around genitals or anus
- Often accompanied by severe pain
- Tingling or prickling sensation may occur as warning signs (prodromal symptoms)
- May be accompanied by fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and other systemic symptoms
<If Left Untreated>
- Symptoms tend to be milder than the first episode
- In some cases, only warning signs appear without blisters
Details
What is Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes is an STI caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Once infected, the virus remains dormant in the nerves and can recur when triggered by fatigue, stress, or weakened immunity. It can spread not only through sexual intercourse but also through skin or mucous membrane contact and oral sex, so caution is needed.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Virus remains dormant in nerves and recurs repeatedly
- Each recurrence carries risk of spreading infection to others
- Without proper treatment during initial infection, recovery period may be prolonged
Testing
- Visual examination by doctor (when symptoms are present)
- Blood test or viral detection test of lesions as needed
- Test results: Same day
Treatment
Genital herpes is treated with oral or topical antiviral medications.
For those with frequent recurrences, long-term suppressive therapy may be considered.
While current medicine cannot completely eliminate the virus, early treatment can reduce symptoms and suppress recurrences.
Genital Candidiasis
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Itching in the genital area
- Redness or burning sensation
- White, yogurt-like discharge may occur
<If Left Untreated>
- Scratching and secondary infection due to worsening itching and inflammation
- Symptoms repeatedly return (become chronic)
Details
What is Genital Candidiasis?
Genital candidiasis is an STI that occurs when Candida fungi (yeast) grow excessively in the genital area. Candida is a type of fungus that normally lives in and on the human body, but can overgrow due to weakened immunity, antibiotic use, stress, or irregular lifestyle habits.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Disruption to daily life including sleep problems and reduced concentration due to itching and inflammation
- Prolonged or chronic symptoms
Testing
- Collection of discharge for microscopic examination or culture test
- Test results: 1 week
Treatment
Genital candidiasis is treated with oral or topical antifungal medications. To prevent recurrence, it is important to keep the affected area clean and review your lifestyle habits.
Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Mild pain or discomfort when urinating
- Itching or discomfort in the genital area
- Discharge may occur (clear to slightly cloudy)
<If Left Untreated>
- Mild symptoms may continue chronically
Details
What are Mycoplasma/Ureaplasma?
Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma are very small bacteria that infect the urethra through sexual contact.
They have become increasingly recognized as major causes of non-gonococcal urethritis.
These bacteria are difficult to detect with standard culture tests and require special tests such as PCR.
Because drug-resistant strains exist, proper testing and treatment are important.
Risks if Left Untreated
- Urethritis or prostatitis may become chronic even with few symptoms
Testing
- Detection by PCR (nucleic acid amplification) using urine or discharge samples
- Combined testing with chlamydia and gonorrhea is available
- Mycoplasma test results: Next day
- Ureaplasma test results: 1 week
Treatment
Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma are treated with oral antibiotics.
Trichomoniasis
Main Symptoms
<Early Symptoms>
- Discomfort or mild itching when urinating
- Discomfort or irritation in the genital area
- Clear to cloudy discharge may occur
<If Left Untreated>
- Discomfort and discharge may continue long-term
- May occur together with other STIs
Details
What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is an STI caused by a single-celled organism called Trichomonas. It mainly infects the urethra and external genital area through sexual contact and causes inflammation.
Risks if Left Untreated
- As inflammation progresses, pain and discomfort when urinating may worsen
Testing
- Doctor's examination + microscopic examination of urine or discharge, or PCR test
- Test results: Next day
Treatment
Trichomoniasis is treated with oral antiprotozoal medication.
"Many STIs can still have the infection in your body even if symptoms temporarily disappear.
Therefore, do not decide on your own that you are cured. It is important to continue treatment until your doctor confirms you are healed.
Even after you finish treatment, you can get reinfected by your partner.
Encouraging your partner to get tested and treated helps prevent reinfection.
After completing treatment, consult with your doctor and get retested as needed to ensure complete recovery."

STI Prevention
At Revios Men's Clinic Shinsaibashi, we offer:
Doxy-PEP: A preventive medication for syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia (take in 72 hours after sex)
HPV Vaccine: Injections to help prevent genital warts (condyloma)
Doxy-PEP (STI Prevention Medication)
What is Doxy-PEP (STI Prevention Medication)?
Doxy-PEP (Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that can help prevent syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia when you take the antibiotic doxycycline (Vibramycin) within 72 hours after sexual contact.
For best results, it is recommended to take it within 24 hours, before bacteria levels increase.
Studies have shown that Doxy-PEP can prevent:
Syphilis: 87%, Gonorrhea: 55%, Chlamydia: 88%*
Syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can infect not only the genitals but also the throat and anus.
Infections in the throat and anus often show no symptoms, so many people don't realize they are infected.
This can lead to unknowingly passing the infection to partners, creating a cycle of reinfection (ping-pong infection).
*Based on findings presented at the International AIDS Conference in July 2022
Doxy-PEP is recommended for:
- Those who may have sexual contact, including oral sex
- Those who have sex with multiple partners
- People with a history of STIs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia
- Those who have had sex without a condom
- Those who work in the adult entertainment industry or similar fields where there is a higher risk of STI exposure
- Those who use sexual services or visit adult entertainment establishments
Who cannot take Doxy-PEP
The following individuals should not take Doxy-PEP:
- Photosensitivity (sun sensitivity)
- Allergies to tetracycline antibiotics
Side effects of Doxy-PEP
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Dizziness etc
*These side effects often occur when you first start taking the medication, but usually decrease as your body gets used to it.
If you already have a sexually transmitted infection (STI), Doxy-PEP cannot treat or prevent it, so testing is required before the medication can be prescribed.
*Medicine can be prescribed on the same day.
At Revios Men's Clinic Shinsaibashi, we can prescribe from 1 to 30 doses at one visit.
Before prescribing, our urologist will examine you and clearly explain how to take the medication.

Contact / Reservations (LINE)HPV Vaccine
What is HPV Vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is known for preventing cervical cancer, but it can also help prevent men from getting genital warts (Condyloma acuminata).
Genital warts can cause significant emotional stress and often recur after treatment.
HPV has been found to cause several cancers that are more common in men, including throat, anal, rectal, and penile cancers.
The vaccine has been shown to help prevent these cancers.
Since HPV infection in women can lead to cervical cancer, we recommend men get vaccinated to protect their partners as well.
We recommend the HPV vaccine for:
- Those infected with Condyloma acuminata
- Preventing HPV-related cancers such as oropharyngeal, anal, and penile cancers
Who cannot receive the HPV vaccine:
- Individuals with hypersensitivity to Gardasil
- Those undergoing immunosuppressive therapy or HIV treatment
Possible side effects of the HPV vaccine:
- Pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site
- Fever and fatigue, allergic reactions, etc.
